In honor of Thelonious Monk’s 90th birthday, Tri-C JazzFest Cleveland is proud to produce and present this one-of-a-kind concert to recognize and celebrate the work of this great pianist, composer and architect of the bebop era.
Considered one of the most influential figures in jazz history, Monk achieved a startlingly original sound that even his most devoted followers have not been able to successfully imitate. He is the subject of award-winning documentaries, biographies and scholarly studies, prime time television tributes, and has an Institute created in his name.
Some of today’s most recognized jazz legends will join forces in the performance. Under the musical direction of Cleveland native and tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano are Kenny Barron, renowned jazz pianist who specializes in the music of Monk; bassist George Mraz; and drummer Victor Lewis.
